TODAY ON ORF: Family the Other Way Around (ORF 2, 10:30 p.m.)

"And how is it with a man?", asks the mother of Manfred Hörmann at his outing. "You know that best yourself", he responds tersely. The self-confidence, visibility and the public acceptance of homosexuality has increased in recent decades. But when asked whether homosexual partners should be allowed to have and raise children like any other couple, the opinions differ greatly. Outlandish claims about excessive and promiscuous lifestyles or other stereotypes often overshadow the fact that gays and lesbians can be just as committed, stuffy, boring, loyal and conservative as the average hetero couple. The film shows lesbians and gay men who have realized their wish for children in various ways. From a Catholic perspective, the approval of artificial insemination for lesbians and an expansion of the family model to include "rainbow families" is taboo: They fear a fatherless society and a loss of values that will place children at the mercy of contemporary whims of self-realization.
